The eruption on the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier in Iceland, which began on Wednesday, has disabled air traffic throughout central and northern Europe, leaving thousands of travelers stranded.

At the moment, wind is pushing the mass of volcanic ash from Iceland to Europe and, according to forecasts, this will continue for at least another two days and possibly until the middle of next week, the meteorological report said.

Professor Gudmundson, who is observing the active volcano, said on Friday that there is still no certainty about what it will do.

"Eruptions could stop tomorrow, but they could also continue disrupting normal air transport for several weeks or even months," he said.

On Saturday a dense dark-grey 8.5 meter high column of smoke was seen above the volcano.
